Psoriasis is a disease of the skin that causes red, itchy patches. These are most often found on elbows, knees, and the torso. These scaly patches are raised during high periods of inflammation in the body as an auto-immune response.

It can be a very uncomfortable affliction, especially when you’re trying to relax and get to sleep. In addition, a flare-up can wake you up due to the discomfort.

University Center for Rehabilitation and Nursing has details on four ways to stay comfortable when sleeping with psoriasis.

  1. Moisturize the Skin

Especially if you shower before bed, you’ll want to make sure to moisturize the skin so it doesn’t dry out. Whatever lotion, cream, or oil works best for you is what you should use, but cocoa butter lotion is a popular choice. Also, avoid scented lotions, as those can cause skin irritation.

  1. Use Cotton

Cotton pajamas and bedding is best for those with psoriasis because it’s soft and breathable. Some may also want to consider cotton gloves if you often wake up bleeding from scratching your hands while you sleep.

  1. Medicines

Over-the-counter medicines like Benadryl (and other antihistamines) and Vick’s Vapor Rub can provide relief from that itchy feeling, but you should check with your doctor to make sure that those won’t interact adversely with any medication you’re taking for psoriasis.

  1. Meditation

Stress is often a common trigger for a psoriasis flare-up, so to help your body rest at night, doctors suggest meditating to calm the mind and prepare the body for sleep. Putting your body in a relaxing state will not only help you fall asleep, but you’re more likely to stay asleep as well.
